Gator junior Brooke Copeland has been honored with a spot on the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team, the league office announced Wednesday.
This the 19th year for the SEC Community Service Team for women’s basketball and Copeland has been Florida’s honoree each of the last three seasons, tying Sarah Lowe (2004, 2005, 2006) as the only other three-time recipient in program history.
Copeland and fellow 2017 SEC Community Service Team member Lianna Doty of Missouri, are two of only seven women all-time who have been three-time honorees in league history, joining Blanche Alverson (Auburn), Rebecca Kates (Mississippi State), Rebecca Rowsey (Georgia), Sarah Lowe and Sarah Pfeifer (Arkansas).
A quick overview of some of Brooke Copeland’s work in the community:
- She holds a board position in Gainesville at GiGi’s Playhouse, which is a Down Syndrome Achievement Center that provides no-fee programs and positive support to children and adults with Down syndrome.
- She does that type of service on her own and refuses to allow anyone to log or record her time commitment to it because she doesn’t feel as though its ‘community service.’
- Visited Thailand in May of 2016 on a mission trip
- Made countless visits to Shands Pediatrics wards
- Attends a Special Needs Prom every year
- Reads to children in local elementary schools
- Spends countless hours with Caleb’s Pitch is a nonprofit organization founded to honor the inspirational spirit of Caleb Jacobbe. It is dedicated to creating positive experiences and enhancing quality of life for children and their families confronting serious childhood illnesses.
- She is a ‘treatment buddy’ for ill children.
- In additional to a number of other community projects Brooke dedicates her time with, she spends the most mentoring Anna Rose, whom Brooke first met during a visit to Shands Hospital. Anna Rose was a 10-year-old struggling to overcome cancer
