What Just Happened
- Florida’s three seniors helped make Cameron Newbauer’s Gator coaching debut a success, as the trio combined for 51 points in an 82-66 season-opening victory against Georgia State on Saturday.
- Newbauer’s “chuck it from the cheap seats†mantra didn’t disappoint, as Florida went 10-31 from the three-point arc for the most made treys since hitting 10 vs. Kentucky in the 2016 SEC Tournament; the 31 attempts were the most since launching a program-record 34 vs. North Florida on Nov. 19, 2012.
- Seven different Gators connected on a three-pointer
A Glance at Arkansas State
- A-State dropped a 93-51 decision in its opener at Indiana on Nov. 11.
- The Red Wolves are the second consecutive Gator opponent from the Sun Belt Conference.
- A-State was picked to finished sixth in the league’s preseason poll, while Georgia State – UF’s last opponent – was picked eighth.
Florida vs. Arkansas State: The Series
- 4-Game Series: UF leads 4-0 (UF Home: 2-0; Away: 1-0; Neutral: 1-0)
- Tuesday’s game will mark the third consecutive season the Gators and Red Wolves square off.
- UF won last year’s game in Jonesboro, 71-60. Only 30 points were scored by Gators who will suit up for Tuesday’s game.
- The last meeting in Gainesville was a 76-72 thriller on Dec. 7, 2015. Trailing by 11 points with 4:47 left in the third, the Gators rattled off 12 consecutive points and retaining the lead (53-52) for the first time since the 1:05 mark of the second quarter. Arkansas State eventually tied things up in the final 90 seconds, but two free throws from junior small forward Ronni Williams and Cassie Peoples’ dagger in the paint allowed Florida to close out its seventh consecutive victory.
Home!
- The Gators have 10 nine consecutive non-conference home games – 1-0 this year!
- Last year, UF won its lone home non-league game.
- The 2015-16 squad won all 8 non-SEC home games.
- The 2014-15 Gators went 6-2, but the streak at the end of the season was one win.
Quoting Coach Cameron Newbauer
On Arkansas State
“They are a very athletic team; very defensive-minded, where they want to get up in the passing lane and pressure the ball. They really make you work for everything. We have to be prepared to play together, play strong. From an offensive standpoint for them, they are very aggressive. They averaged 19 free throws a game last year and have a number of players who are dangerous in the open floor.
“A lot of things that they do well, we’re not great at defending right now so it will be a great test for us for sure.â€
