Danielle Rainey, a 5-foot-8 guard from Round Rock, Texas, has been admitted to the University of Florida enrolled in classes for Spring 2018 semester with the intent of playing with the Gator women’s basketball team, Coach Cameron Newbauer announced.
Rainey spent her freshman year at TCU, where she played in 11 games. She did not play during the fall 2018 semester with the Horned Frogs. Rainey will have three years of eligibility remaining at UF.
Rainey is the third newcomer to the Gators roster since December 12, when freshman walk-on Stephanie Brower became a member of the squad. Gator soccer All-American Gabby Seiler then officially joined the team on January 4. Brower and Seiler are eligibly immediately.
Brower has played in two games since becoming a member of the Gators. During her prep days a Wiregrass Ranch (Fla.) High School, Brower compiled 1,493 points in 123 games, averaging 12.1 points during her four-year tenure. She also collected 8.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 3.1 steals per game.
Before she became a soccer star for the Gators, Seiler was a stellar two-sport athlete at McIntosh (Ga.) High School, where she broke the school’s all-time scoring record – boys and girls – and finished her career with more than 2,000 points. Interestingly, Newbauer recruited Seiler to play basketball while he was an assistant coach at the University of Georgia, where Seiler signed but only to focus her talents in soccer.
Quotes from the Court – Coach Cameron Newbauer on Rainey’s impact
“Danielle is a young lady who is going to contribute immediately to our culture, in the locker room and on the court. She wants to be a part of something bigger than herself and the building of a program. She understands where we are in the stages of the program and is eager to be part of that – she wanted to get to campus as soon as she could.
“She stepped right into practice (January 6) and looked like she has always been a part of this team. She belongs here and it showed. She didn’t really even know what we were doing during that first practice but stepped up and contributed. Danielle can shoot the ball well and has really good form on her shot. She can shoot the three, shoot pull-ups.
“She has really good length and size. She’s eager to get in the weight room and do extra workouts while she sits out (per NCAA rules for transfers). Overall, I’m really excited to add her to our 2018 class.â€
