For the first time in her career, Florida senior Haley Lorenzen has been selected as the Southeastern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced today.
Lorenzen had a double-double in both of UF’s games last week that helped Florida halt a five-game losing streak and notch its first two SEC wins of the season. She recorded 12 points, 10 rebounds and tied a career with five assists in the road win at Arkansas, before notching 18 points with a career-best 13 rebounds and two blocks in the thrilling 61-60 win against Ole Miss.
For the week, Lorenzen averaged 15 points and 11.5 rebounds, while shooting 52.4 percent from the floor, including 2-of-3 three pointers and all six of her free throw attempts.
She was huge in the fourth quarter against Ole Miss, which had defeated the Gators earlier in the season. On Sunday, the Gators entered the final quarter down 13 points, when Lorenzen took control. During that fourth quarter alone, she tallied seven points, seven rebounds, two blocks and one assist.
Lorenzen grabbed an offensive rebound and put it in with 27 seconds remaining that proved to be the game-winner. Ole Miss had a chance to win it with 9.1 seconds to play, but Lorenzen blocked Alissa Alston’s layup and UF grabbed the rebound with one second remaining.
Lorenzen finished with a game-high 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds for her 11th double-double this season and 15th of her career.
The Gator senior scored seven of her points during the fourth quarter on 3-of-4 shooting, that included a deep three-pointer she launched as the shot clock expired with 5:20 remaining that cut Florida’s deficit to three points, 56-53, and sent the Gators’ fans into a frenzy.
Lorenzen and the Gators next play at No. 2 Mississippi State on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. CT and will be televised live by SEC Network.
