University of Florida women’s basketball head coach Cam Newbauer announced today the signing of Floor Toonders (Wageningen, Netherlands) to the Gators’ 2020 recruiting class.
Toonders joins Jordyn Merritt (Plano, Texas) and Brynn Farrell (Ortley Beach, N.J.) who signed during the early signing period in November.
Newbauer on Toonders
“We are excited to add Floor Toonders to our 2020 signing class. Floor is a versatile forward with the ability to stretch the floor, score from the perimeter and create mismatches both inside and out. Her length and athleticism will impact the game both . offensively and defensively. Floor is a charismatic young lady with a drive to be great. She will make a very welcomed addition to our Gator family.”
The six-foot-four forward provides tremendous versatility and skill from the post position. Known to be a strong athlete and confident shooter, Toonders earned a four-star rank from Blue Star Europe. Toonders played for the Netherlands in the 2019 FIBA U18 Women’s European Championships where she averaged 7.6 points, 5.8 rebounds in 24 minutes playing in the A Division and also played in the U16 FIBA Championships in 2017.
Toonders also represented her home country in the FIBA 3×3 U18 Europe Cup and was one of the youngest players on her Division 3 Orange Lions squad in Holland. This season she played in five games with the Orange Lions, competing in one of the country’s premier leagues.
Toonders helped guide her U19 team to the EGBL Finals in 2019 and was named to the all-star team.
UF’s recruiting classes have steadily climbed over Coach Newbauer’s time at the helm. After the staff’s first resulted in the No. 31 rank from ProspectsNation, the 2019 class rose to No. 26 and the future continues to look bright. In addition, the Gators have landed top 50 prospects in consecutive classes. UF went without an ESPN top 100 player for three-consecutive class (2015-17), but each year under Newbauer it has secured a top 100 talent. With the signing Briggs a season ago and Merritt in 2020, UF has landed five-star recruits in back-to-back years for the first time since the 2012 and 2013 classes. Like Briggs, Merritt was also named to the Jordan Brand Classic. Briggs and Merritt are the only two players in program history to earn a spot on the event’s roster.
Toonders on her Commitment
“It was just amazing, the campus, the facilities and all that combined with the school and people, it was great. When I met the team I really liked the positive vibes and watching the team play. They played fast and with great teamwork. After seeing the team play, I really wanted to be a part of that. I look forward to playing against some of the best competition. It will be great to play with such good teammates and for me to improve my game.”
